January 16 - Isaiah 7-11
In every period of human history, man has longed for a perfect ruler. We usually vote for someone that we view as just, wise, and able to bring peace and prosperity. We eventually discover that all human kings, prime ministers, presidents, and world leaders fall short. No human leader has ever been able to deliver the promise of lasting peace and prosperity.
Isaiah chapter 11 gives a prophetic vision of a perfect ruler who will come - the Jewish Messiah. From the “stem of Jesse” arises a Branch, a King anointed by the Spirit, who will establish righteousness, justice, peace, and prosperity in a broken world. The world will be a much different place when the government is on His shoulder (Isaiah 9:6).
Israel looked like a fallen tree after judgment, but God promised new life. Jesse was David’s father, pointing to the Davidic line. Though cut down in judgment, God’s covenant stood and 2500 years later, God’s covenant still stands. The Jews are still holding to the unconditional promise of a Messiah who will come and sit on the throne of David and establish a kingdom that will never end.
Isaiah 11:6-9 points to the peacefulness of the coming kingdom. There will be peace and harmony throughout the earth. Isaiah paints a picture of harmony even in nature: wolf with lamb, leopard with goat, lion with calf, and a child playing safely among snakes. This imagery conveys the reversal of the curse - peace among creation, nations, and people. I love where Isaiah said, “The earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” Everyone will come to Jerusalem to be taught by the Lord.
The Messiah is not just a Jewish King but “a banner for all peoples” (v.10). This anticipates Gentile inclusion in the coming kingdom (Romans 15:12). Long time barriers and hostilities between nations will be removed. True world peace will only come under the rule and reign of Jesus Christ.
Christ inaugurated His kingdom when He came the first time, but the fullness awaits His return. We live between the promise and the consummation of His kingdom. The promise of the coming kingdom gives us hope in dark times. In a world filled with corrupt leaders, we look to Jesus. Also, while we await Christ’s return, we embody His kingdom values. This world is not our home - we are looking for the King and His kingdom to come. EVEN SO COME LORD JESUS!
