FOCUS PASSAGE: Psalm 110
Psalm 110 stands as one of the clearest Old Testament prophecies concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. Written by David under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, this psalm looks beyond Israel's earthly kings to the coming Messiah whose kingdom would never end. It presents Christ as both the eternal King and the perfect High Priest, assuring believers that His reign is certain, righteous, and everlasting.
The psalm opens with the remarkable declaration: "The LORD said to my Lord, 'Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool'" (Psalm 110:1). Jesus Himself quoted this verse to demonstrate that the Messiah was far more than David's descendant. He is David's Lord (Matthew 22:41–46). Following His resurrection and ascension, Christ took His place at the Father's right hand, the position of supreme authority and honor. Although evil still exists in the world, Christ already reigns from heaven, and every enemy will ultimately be subdued beneath His feet.
Verse 2 proclaims that the Lord will extend Christ's rule from Zion, declaring, "Rule in the midst of Your enemies!" Unlike earthly rulers whose authority is limited and temporary, Christ's dominion advances even in a hostile world. His kingdom grows as the gospel transforms lives and people willingly submit to His lordship. One day His visible reign will encompass all creation, fulfilling every promise God has made.
The psalm also reveals the willing devotion of Christ's people: "Your people shall be volunteers in the day of Your power" (v. 3). Those who belong to Christ do not serve Him reluctantly but joyfully. His grace changes hearts so that obedience becomes an expression of love rather than mere duty.
Perhaps the most astonishing declaration comes in verse 4: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." Unlike the priests descended from Aaron, whose ministries ended with death, Christ's priesthood is eternal. The Book of Hebrews explains that Jesus continually intercedes for His people, having offered Himself once for all as the perfect sacrifice for sin. Because His priesthood never ends, believers enjoy permanent access to God through Him.
The closing verses portray Christ as the victorious Judge of the nations. Every kingdom that opposes Him will fall, and every act of injustice will be answered with perfect righteousness. His victory is complete and His authority absolute. The King who once wore a crown of thorns will return wearing many crowns, and every knee will bow before Him.
Psalm 110 reminds Christians that history is not moving toward uncertainty but toward the triumphant reign of Jesus Christ. He reigns today, He intercedes for His people continually, and He will return in glory to establish His everlasting kingdom. Therefore, believers can live with confidence, hope, and unwavering faith, knowing that Christ will reign forever, and those who belong to Him will share in the blessings of His eternal kingdom.
