November 2 - Deuteronomy 7-9
“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.” (Deuteronomy 7:6)
God desires His people to be holy. The word holy means "set apart" or "consecrated" for God's purposes. Israel was not chosen because of its greatness, wealth, or military power. Rather, God graciously set His love upon them and called them to reflect His character to the nations of the world. Holiness was to distinguish them from the surrounding pagan cultures whose practices were marked by idolatry and moral corruption.
God's call to holiness involved every aspect of Israel's life. Their worship was to be directed to the one true God alone. Their moral conduct was to reflect God's righteousness. Their relationships, business dealings, family life, and justice system were all to demonstrate that they belonged to the Lord. Israel's obedience was not the means of earning God's love; it was the proper response to His covenant love and redeeming grace.
This principle continues throughout the Bible. In the New Testament, the apostle Peter applies the same truth to believers in Christ: "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct" (1 Peter 1:15). Christians have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ and have become God's own people. Therefore, believers are called to live lives that honor Him in thought, word, and deed.
Holiness is not merely avoiding sinful behavior; it is actively pursuing a life that pleases God. A holy person loves what God loves and hates what God hates. Holiness is cultivated through daily fellowship with the Lord, consistent prayer, faithful study of His Word, and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. As believers submit themselves to God, He transforms them into the likeness of Christ. Holiness is about fulfilling God’s purpose for your life.
The world often pressures God's people to conform to its values and priorities. Just as Israel faced constant temptation to adopt the customs of the Canaanites, Christians today face pressure to compromise biblical truth in order to gain acceptance. Yet God still calls His people to be distinct. Our speech, attitudes, priorities, integrity, compassion, and purity should reveal that we belong to Christ. Holiness is not isolation from the world but separation from its sinful values while faithfully serving others in love.
Deuteronomy 7:6 reminds us that holiness begins with God's gracious choice and is demonstrated through faithful obedience. We are God's treasured possession, redeemed for His glory and called to represent Him before a watching world. As we pursue holiness, we bear witness to the transforming power of God's grace and point others to the Savior. May every believer embrace God's call to be "a holy people," living lives that bring honor to His holy name.
