January 21 - Psalm 6-8
David begins and ends Psalm 8 with the same exclamation: “O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth.” Psalm 8 is a hymn of praise, celebrating God’s splendor in creation and His care for all humanity. When David gazed at the night sky, he saw the vastness of the universe. The more he beheld its grandeur, the more he marveled that God would ever take notice of him.
David calls the heavens the work of God’s fingers. The imagery suggests delicate artistry. What we call vast and infinite, God calls finger work. The cosmos is not random; it is God’s handywork. The heavens are not chaotic; they operate with order and precision. Every orbit, every gravitational constant, every fine-tuned element of existence points beyond blind chance to intelligent design. Just look at the earth’s position in the solar system, the balance of oxygen, carbon, and water, and the mathematical harmony of physics and biology. Each detail shouts the truth: “This is the work of God’s hands!”
When David looked up at the heavens, he saw the overwhelming vastness of God’s creation. There are galaxies, stars, and systems beyond number. The universe stretches billions of light-years across. Each galaxy contains billions of stars. Earth is a small planet in one solar system, orbiting one of the countless stars. And yet, God is mindful of each of us.
The word mindful means to remember with affection and purpose. God not only knows our existence, He knows our name, our thoughts, our needs, and our struggles. The same God who orchestrated the galaxies also hears us when we pray. As He governs the orbits of the stars and planets, God also attends to the details of our lives. “O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth.”
