January 22 - Job 5-6
Job 5-6 continues the dialogue between Eliphaz and Job. Eliphaz offered advice that mixed truth with misapplied judgment. The thing to understand, when someone is suffering, they need empathy more than truth. Good theology delivered without empathy can add more wounds to a heart that is already broken. We must avoid assuming a one-size-fits-all theology of suffering. Not all pain is punishment.
When Job responds, he uncovers his desperation before God. Job’s words show the depth of real faith that struggles openly before God. Job shows us that spiritual exhaustion can coexist with faithfulness. True faith may question but it does not renounce.
Here’s what it means not to be an Eliphaz: • Don’t assume that you know why someone is suffering. • Listen more, speak less. • Avoid simplistic or pat answers. • Speak the truth I love, not accusation.
Again, the takeaway from Job 5-6 is that true friendship comforts before it corrects. The suffering need presence more than philosophy.
