THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

- Posted in Prayer Praise Truth by

April 11 - Mark 7-8

When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. (Mark 8:34)

This verse captures the essence of what it means to truly follow Christ. First, Jesus begins with an invitation: “Whoever desires to come after Me.” This emphasizes that following Him is voluntary. Christ does not coerce or manipulate; instead, He calls individuals to willingly choose Him. Yet this invitation is not casual or superficial. It demands careful consideration, as the cost of discipleship is high. The phrase suggests that desire alone is not enough; there must also be commitment and action.

The first requirement Jesus gives is self-denial: “let him deny himself.” In a culture that often promotes self-fulfillment and personal ambition, this command runs counter to human nature. To deny oneself is not simply to give up certain pleasures or comforts; it is to renounce the authority of self as the center of one’s life. It means surrendering personal will, pride, and control, and submitting instead to the will of God. This is a daily, ongoing decision, not just a one-time act.

Next, Jesus says, “take up his cross.” In the Roman world, the cross was a symbol of suffering, shame, and death. To take up one’s cross meant to embrace a path of sacrifice, even to the point of death if necessary. It reminds believers that following Christ may involve hardship, rejection, or persecution. It is not a promise of comfort or ease, but a call to endure faithfully whatever comes for the sake of Christ.

Finally, Jesus commands, “and follow Me.” This is the ultimate goal of discipleship. It’s not merely self-denial or suffering for its own sake, but a life oriented around Jesus Himself. To follow Him means to imitate His character, obey His teachings, and walk in His footsteps. It involves trust, dependence, and a growing relationship with Him. The order of the commands is significant: denial of self and taking up the cross are necessary in order to truly follow Christ.

Mark 8:34 reveals that true discipleship is costly but meaningful. It calls believers to shift their focus from self-centered living to Christ-centered living. While the demands are great, the promise is greater: a life aligned with God’s purpose and ultimately, eternal life with Him. Jesus does not hide the difficulty of the journey, but He assures His followers that it is worth it. In this verse, we see that to follow Christ is to lose one’s life in order to find it.
