June 9 - 1 Kings 5-9
Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying: 12 “Concerning this temple which you are building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will perform My word with you, which I spoke to your father David. (1 Kings 6:11-12)
The little word “if” carries profound spiritual significance because it reveals the conditional nature of God's blessings and promises.
The temple was a magnificent structure designed to honor God. Solomon invested enormous resources, labor, and skill into its construction. Yet God interrupted the building process to remind Solomon that the success of the temple was not dependent merely upon physical construction. The Lord emphasized that obedience was more important than architecture. The word “if” introduced a condition that Solomon had to meet in order to experience the fullness of God's covenant blessings.
This “if” demonstrates a recurring biblical principle: God desires a relationship of faithful obedience from His people. While God had promised David that his descendants would reign after him, Solomon was reminded that personal obedience mattered. He was required to walk in God's statutes, execute His judgments, and keep His commandments. The promise of God's presence and favor was connected to Solomon's willingness to obey His Word.

Furthermore, the “if” highlights human responsibility. God remains faithful to His promises, but He calls His people to respond with faith and obedience. Throughout Scripture, blessings often follow obedience, while disobedience brings consequences. Solomon's later life tragically illustrates this truth, as his failure to remain fully devoted to God eventually led to the division of the kingdom.
In conclusion, the word “if” is much more than a simple conjunction. It serves as a divine reminder that obedience is essential to experiencing God's favor and fellowship. The passage teaches that God's people must not only build for Him but also walk with Him in faithful obedience.
