June 8 - Exodus 37-40
Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36 Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys. 37 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the LORD was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. (Exodus 40:34-38)
After Moses completed the construction of the Tabernacle according to God’s instructions, “the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle” (v. 34). This visible manifestation of God’s presence, often called the Glory Cloud or Shekinah Glory, demonstrated that God had accepted the Tabernacle as His dwelling place among His people.
The cloud symbolized both God’s nearness and His holiness. Although God desired to dwell among Israel, His glory was so overwhelming that even Moses could not enter the Tabernacle while the cloud rested upon it (v. 35). This revealed the majesty and purity of God, reminding the Israelites that sinful humanity cannot casually approach a holy God.
The Glory Cloud also served as God’s guidance for the nation. Verses 36–38 explain that whenever the cloud was taken up from above the Tabernacle, the Israelites would continue their journey. When the cloud remained, they stayed in their camp. Thus, the cloud became a constant reminder that Israel was to move only at God’s command and according to His timing. By day the cloud was visible, and by night it appeared as fire, providing assurance that God was continually present with His people.
For Christians, the Glory Cloud points forward to Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate revelation of God’s presence among humanity. It also foreshadows the indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit, through whom God now dwells within believers. The Glory Cloud teaches that God desires fellowship with His people, guides them faithfully, and deserves reverent worship. It remains a powerful symbol of God’s glory, leadership, and covenant faithfulness throughout every generation.
