June 17 - Psalm 69-71
Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me. 3 I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. (Psalm 69:1-3)
David begins with an urgent plea: “Save me, O God!” His circumstances are so severe that he compares them to rising floodwaters threatening to drown him. The imagery of water reaching his neck conveys the sense that he is at the very edge of destruction. He is not merely inconvenienced or discouraged; he feels trapped in a life-threatening situation from which he cannot escape on his own.
The reference to “deep mire” further emphasizes David's helplessness. Mire is thick mud that traps and immobilizes anyone who steps into it. David feels as though he is sinking deeper and deeper without any firm ground beneath him. Humanly speaking, there is no solution to his predicament. His only hope is divine rescue.
The image then shifts from mud to overwhelming waters. David says he has come into “deep waters” and that “the floods overflow” him. Throughout Scripture, deep waters often symbolize chaos, danger, and overwhelming troubles. David feels engulfed by circumstances beyond his control. His suffering has become so intense that it threatens to consume him completely.
Verse three reveals the emotional and spiritual toll of this prolonged trial. David says he is “weary with” his crying. He has prayed and pleaded with God for so long that his throat has become dry. His eyes grow weak from constantly looking toward heaven and waiting for God's answer. This portrays the painful reality that faith does not always bring immediate relief. Even faithful believers can experience seasons of waiting in which God's deliverance seems delayed.
Yet despite his exhaustion, David continues to wait for God. This is one of the most significant lessons of the passage. Though discouraged, he does not abandon his faith. He directs his cries toward the Lord and continues to look to Him for help. His perseverance demonstrates genuine trust. Faith is not the absence of suffering but the determination to seek God even when relief has not yet arrived.
This passage speaks to anyone who has experienced overwhelming difficulties, prolonged grief, or intense spiritual struggles. It reminds believers that God welcomes honest prayers and understands human pain. Like David, Christians can bring their deepest fears and sorrows before the Lord, trusting that He hears every cry and will ultimately provide deliverance according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
