September 10 - Proverbs 22
"A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold." (Proverbs 22:1)
This proverb teaches that a person's reputation for honesty, integrity, and godliness is one of life's greatest treasures. Money can be earned and lost, but a good name takes years to build and only moments to destroy. Therefore, every follower of Christ should guard his or her name with great care.
A good name is not merely popularity or public recognition. Rather, it is the result of consistent righteous living. It is the confidence others have that a person's word can be trusted, promises will be kept, and actions will reflect biblical principles. Such a reputation cannot be purchased; it is earned through faithful obedience to God over time.
The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the importance of integrity. Joseph maintained his good name even when falsely accused and imprisoned. Daniel refused to compromise his convictions despite intense political pressure, and his enemies could find no fault in him except his faithfulness to God. Above all, the Lord Jesus Christ perfectly demonstrated a spotless character, always doing the will of His Father. These examples remind believers that a good name is founded upon faithfulness rather than convenience.
The New Testament echoes this principle. Christians are called to live "honorably among the Gentiles" so that their conduct glorifies God. A damaged testimony not only affects the individual but can also hinder the witness of the gospel. When believers act dishonestly, speak carelessly, or live hypocritically, the name of Christ is dishonored before an unbelieving world. Guarding our own name is ultimately about protecting the reputation of the Savior we represent.
Guarding one's name requires daily discipline. It means speaking truthfully, fulfilling commitments, practicing financial honesty, treating others with respect, and refusing to engage in gossip or deceit. It also requires humility. When we fail, we should quickly confess our sins, seek forgiveness, and make restitution whenever possible. A humble heart often restores credibility more effectively than excuses or denial.
In today's digital age, protecting a good name has become even more important. Words spoken online, comments posted on social media, and actions recorded forever on the internet can shape a person's reputation for years. Believers should remember that every public action either strengthens or weakens their Christian testimony.
Proverbs 22:1 reminds us that true wealth is not found in bank accounts but in godly character. Riches may provide temporary comfort, but a good name earns trust, opens doors for ministry, and brings honor to God. Let every believer choose integrity over profit, faithfulness over popularity, and Christlike character over worldly success. A good name is indeed one of God's greatest earthly blessings and is always worth guarding.
