September 5 - John 10-12
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (John 10:27)
This verse reveals three identifying marks of every true believer. Christ's sheep hear His voice, they are personally known by Him, and they faithfully follow wherever He leads. These characteristics distinguish authentic Christians from those who merely profess faith outwardly.
First, Jesus says, "My sheep hear My voice." Sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd because they have become familiar with it. Likewise, believers recognize the voice of Christ through His Word and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. They eagerly listen to Scripture because it is God's revelation to them. While the world is filled with competing voices promising happiness, success, or self-fulfillment, the child of God learns to discern and treasure the voice of the Good Shepherd. Hearing Christ's voice is more than simply listening with the ears; it involves a willing heart that receives, believes, and obeys His truth.
Second, Jesus declares, "I know them." This is one of the most comforting statements in all of Scripture. Christ's knowledge of His sheep is not merely intellectual; it is personal and intimate. He knows every joy, every burden, every temptation, and every tear. Long before we knew Him, He knew us. He chose us, sought us, redeemed us through His sacrifice on the cross, and continually intercedes for us. Our security does not rest in how well we know Christ but in the wonderful reality that He knows us completely and loves us perfectly.
Third, Jesus says, "They follow Me." True faith always results in obedient discipleship. Sheep naturally follow their shepherd because they trust him. In the same way, Christians follow Christ by submitting their lives to His authority. This does not mean believers live sinless lives, but it does mean the overall direction of their lives is one of growing obedience. They desire to walk where Christ leads, even when the path involves sacrifice, suffering, or uncertainty. Following Jesus requires daily surrender, trusting that the Shepherd always leads His flock in paths of righteousness.
These three truths belong together. Those who hear Christ's voice are known by Him, and those who are known by Him will follow Him. None of these marks stands alone. A profession of faith without obedience is empty. Likewise, religious activity without a personal relationship with Christ cannot save. Genuine salvation produces a transformed life characterized by listening to Christ, resting in His love, and walking in His ways.
John 10:27 challenges every believer to examine his or her life. Are we listening attentively to the Shepherd's voice through His Word? Are we resting confidently in His personal care? Are we faithfully following wherever He leads? Those who can answer "yes" by God's grace have the joyful assurance that they belong to the Good Shepherd, who will never abandon His sheep but will lead them safely into His eternal presence.
