October 23 - THE BOOK OF NAHUM

The book of Nahum is a prophetic message that declares God's judgment upon the Assyrian Empire and its capital city, Nineveh. Written approximately a century after the prophet Jonah preached repentance to Nineveh, Nahum reveals that the city's temporary revival had long since disappeared. The Assyrians had returned to their cruelty, violence, idolatry, and oppression of other nations, including Judah. Nahum's prophecy assures God's people that He had not forgotten their suffering and that His justice would ultimately prevail.

The central theme of Nahum is the certainty of God's righteous judgment. Nahum begins by describing the Lord as both patient and powerful: "The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked" (Nahum 1:3). God's patience should never be mistaken for indifference. Though He delays judgment to allow opportunities for repentance, He will not permit evil to continue forever without consequence.

Nahum also emphasizes God's sovereignty over all nations. Assyria appeared invincible, yet God announced its complete destruction. In 612 B.C., Nineveh fell exactly as Nahum foretold, demonstrating that no earthly kingdom can stand against the purposes of Almighty God. Human pride and military strength are powerless before the Lord of hosts.

For believers today, Nahum offers both a warning and a comfort. It warns that persistent rebellion against God will inevitably bring judgment. At the same time, it comforts God's people by reminding them that injustice and persecution will not have the final word. The Lord defends those who trust in Him and will one day establish perfect justice throughout the earth.

Ultimately, the book of Nahum reveals the holy character of God. He is merciful toward those who repent, but He is also just and faithful to punish unrepentant wickedness. Nahum encourages believers to trust God's timing, remain faithful during difficult days, and rest in the certainty that the Judge of all the earth will always do what is right.
