October 22 - Proverbs 31
FOCUS PASSAGE: Proverbs 31:10-31
Proverbs 31:10–31 presents one of the Bible's most beautiful portraits of a godly woman. Often called "the virtuous wife," this passage is not merely a list of accomplishments but a picture of a woman whose entire life is shaped by her reverence for God. While she excels in many areas of life, the secret of her character is found in verse 30: "Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised." This verse reveals that a God-fearing heart is the foundation upon which every other virtue is built.
The passage begins by asking, "Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies" (v. 10). Godly women are precious because they possess qualities that cannot be bought with wealth. Their value is found in integrity, wisdom, faithfulness, and devotion to God. A God-fearing woman enriches the lives of everyone around her, especially her family.
One of the first characteristics of this woman is that she is trustworthy. "The heart of her husband safely trusts her" (v. 11). She is faithful, dependable, and consistently seeks the good of her husband. Verse 12 says, "She does him good and not evil all the days of her life." Her love is demonstrated through daily acts of kindness and sacrificial service rather than mere words.
The Proverbs 31 woman is also diligent and hardworking. She willingly labors with her hands, manages her household wisely, and plans for the future. Whether making clothing, purchasing land, planting vineyards, or providing food for her family, she approaches every responsibility with energy and wisdom. She understands that work is a gift from God and performs it with excellence. Her industrious spirit reminds believers that faithfulness in ordinary duties is a form of worship.
Another beautiful characteristic is her compassion. Verse 20 declares, "She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy." A God-fearing woman does not become so occupied with her own responsibilities that she overlooks those who are suffering. Her heart reflects the mercy and generosity of God, and she willingly shares her blessings with others.
Wisdom also marks her life. "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness" (v. 26). Her words encourage rather than destroy. She speaks truth with gentleness and offers guidance rooted in God's principles. Her speech demonstrates that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.
Perhaps the greatest lesson of Proverbs 31 is that outward beauty is temporary, but spiritual beauty is eternal. Society often praises appearance, popularity, and success, yet God's standard is entirely different. Verse 30 reminds us that physical beauty fades, but a woman who reveres the Lord possesses a beauty that grows richer with time. Her relationship with God transforms her character, influences her family, and leaves a lasting legacy for future generations.
The chapter concludes with praise from her children, her husband, and the community. Their admiration is not based merely on what she has accomplished but on who she has become through her walk with God. Her life glorifies the Lord because every duty, every sacrifice, and every act of kindness flows from a heart devoted to Him.
Proverbs 31 teaches that a God-fearing woman is truly a priceless treasure. Her strength comes from the Lord, her wisdom is guided by His Word, and her greatest beauty is her reverence for Him. She serves as an enduring example that the fear of the Lord is the source of a life that blesses both family and community and brings honor to God.
