October 21 - Psalm 120-121
FOCUS PASSAGE: Psalm 121
Psalm 121 is one of the most beloved psalms in Scripture because it reminds God's people that their ultimate source of help is not found in themselves, in other people, or in favorable circumstances, but in the Lord. As one of the "Songs of Ascents," it was sung by pilgrims as they traveled to Jerusalem. The journey was often difficult and dangerous, yet they traveled with confidence because the God who called them would also keep them.
The psalm opens with a question: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help?" (Psalm 121:1). The hills surrounding Jerusalem could represent danger from robbers or the high places where idol worship was practiced. The psalmist immediately answers his own question with a clear confession of faith: "My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth" (v. 2). Because God is the Creator of all things, He possesses unlimited power to help His people in every circumstance. No problem is beyond His ability to solve, and no burden is too heavy for Him to carry.
The psalm then emphasizes God's constant protection. "He who keeps you will not slumber" (v. 3). Unlike human guards who become tired or distracted, the Lord never sleeps. He watches over His children every moment of every day. Whether they are awake or asleep, God remains alert, faithful, and fully aware of every need.
The Lord is also described as our personal protector. "The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand" (v. 5). In the hot climate of the Middle East, shade meant relief, comfort, and preservation from the blazing sun. God places Himself between His people and the dangers that threaten them. This does not mean believers will never experience trials, but it does mean that nothing can touch them apart from His loving and sovereign will.
Verses 7 and 8 summarize the wonderful promise of the psalm: "The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore." God's keeping extends beyond physical safety. His greatest concern is the eternal well-being of His people. He guards their souls and assures them of His everlasting presence.
For Christians today, Psalm 121 points us to the Lord Jesus Christ, who perfectly reveals the Father's care. Through His death and resurrection, Christ secured our greatest deliverance from sin, death, and eternal judgment. Because He lives, believers have an unfailing Helper who intercedes for them continually and promises never to leave nor forsake them.
In every season of life, whether facing sickness, uncertainty, loss, or daily responsibilities, the believer can confidently echo the psalmist's words: "My help comes from the Lord." Human strength will fail, but God's power never diminishes. His watchful eye never closes, His promises never change, and His faithful care will continue for His people both now and forever.
