July 29 - Psalm 87-89
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 89:1)
Praise is the natural response of a heart that has experienced the goodness and grace of God. In Psalm 89:1, Ethan the Ezrahite begins this beautiful psalm with a declaration of unwavering worship. Rather than focusing on his circumstances, he fixes his attention on the unchanging character of God. His words remind believers in every generation that God is worthy of continual praise because of His mercy and His faithfulness.
The psalmist first declares, "I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever." The word "mercies" speaks of God's steadfast love, covenant kindness, and unfailing compassion. Throughout Scripture, God's mercy is seen in His forgiveness of sinners, His patience with His people, and His continual provision for their needs. Every believer has personally experienced this mercy. We deserved judgment because of our sin, yet through God's grace He provided salvation through Jesus Christ. His mercy did not end at conversion; it continues every day as He forgives, strengthens, and sustains His children. Such amazing mercy deserves songs of thanksgiving not only today but forever.
The psalmist also promises, "With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations." God's faithfulness means that He always keeps His promises. Human beings often disappoint us, but God never fails. His Word is trustworthy, His character is unchanging, and His promises are certain. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals a God who fulfills every covenant He makes. The birth of Christ fulfilled centuries of prophecy. Christ's resurrection confirmed God's promise of victory over sin and death. Believers today can confidently trust that the same faithful God will complete the work He has begun in them.
Notice that the psalmist does not keep these truths to himself. He is determined to proclaim God's faithfulness "to all generations." Praise is not merely a private act; it is also a public testimony. When Christians speak about God's goodness, they encourage fellow believers and point unbelievers toward the Savior. Parents should tell their children about God's faithfulness. Grandparents should pass on stories of God's provision to their grandchildren. Churches should continually proclaim the gospel so that each new generation may know the Lord.
This verse also teaches that praise is a decision of the will. Ethan says, "I will sing." Even when circumstances are difficult, believers can choose to praise God because His character never changes. Trials may come, but God's mercy remains constant. Life may be uncertain, but God's faithfulness is sure. Our worship is anchored not in changing emotions but in the eternal nature of God Himself.
Psalm 89 eventually describes seasons of confusion and suffering, yet it begins with praise. This reminds us that worship is the proper foundation for facing life's difficulties. When we remember God's mercy in the past and trust His faithfulness for the future, our hearts are strengthened with hope.
God is truly worthy to be praised. His mercy has no limit, His faithfulness never fails, and His love endures forever. Therefore, let every believer joyfully sing of His mercies, boldly proclaim His faithfulness, and faithfully pass His truth to the next generation. Like the psalmist, may we resolve to praise the Lord all the days of our lives and throughout eternity.
