August 27 - Proverbs 19
"There are many plans in a man's heart, Nevertheless the LORD's counsel—that will stand." (Proverbs 19:21)
One of the greatest temptations in life is to rely on our own wisdom. We naturally make plans, set goals, and chart the course we believe is best. Planning itself is not condemned in Scripture. In fact, wise planning is encouraged. However, Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that human plans are never a substitute for God's perfect will. While "there are many plans in a man's heart," it is ultimately "the LORD's counsel" that will endure forever. This verse calls every believer to seek God's guidance before making life's important decisions.
Every person has dreams and ambitions. We plan careers, marriages, ministries, finances, and retirement. Yet our knowledge is limited. We cannot see tomorrow, much less years into the future. God, however, sees the end from the beginning. He knows every circumstance, every opportunity, and every danger that lies ahead. What appears to be a perfect plan to us may lead to disappointment, while God's direction often leads us in unexpected paths that result in blessing beyond our imagination.
Seeking the Lord's counsel begins with prayer. James tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously to those who seek Him. Prayer is not simply asking God to bless our plans; it is surrendering our plans to Him. True prayer says, "Lord, not my will, but Yours be done." A surrendered heart is willing to change direction when God makes His will clear.
God's counsel also comes through His Word. The Bible provides principles that guide every area of life. It reveals God's character, exposes sinful motives, and teaches us how to live wisely. No decision should ever contradict the clear teaching of Scripture. The believer who consistently studies God's Word develops the spiritual discernment necessary to recognize His direction.
The Lord often confirms His counsel through the wisdom of mature Christian believers. God has placed pastors, teachers, and spiritually mature friends within the church to offer biblical counsel. While no human advice is infallible, wise counsel grounded in Scripture can help us avoid costly mistakes and encourage us to remain faithful to God's will.
History is filled with examples of people whose carefully laid plans failed because they ignored God. On the other hand, men and women who trusted the Lord often found themselves accomplishing far more than they could have imagined. God's purposes cannot be frustrated. His counsel always prevails because He is sovereign over every circumstance.
As followers of Christ, we should certainly make plans, but we must hold them with open hands. Every decision should be submitted to the Lord's authority with a willingness to obey whatever He reveals. When our plans align with His purpose, we experience peace, confidence, and lasting fruit. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that while our ideas are temporary and imperfect, the counsel of the Lord is eternal, trustworthy, and unchanging. Therefore, the wisest course in every season of life is to seek the Lord's counsel first and follow it faithfully.
