GOD’S VIEW OF DEATH

September 30 - Psalm 114-116

Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints. (Psalm 116:15)

Death is often viewed as humanity's greatest enemy. It brings grief, separation, uncertainty, and tears. Families mourn, friends weep, and hearts ache at the loss of those they love. Yet Psalm 116:15 provides a remarkable glimpse into God's perspective on the death of His children. While believers naturally grieve the loss of loved ones, God sees the death of His faithful people very differently.

The word precious means valuable, costly, and of great worth. The passing of one of God's saints is never insignificant or accidental. He takes special notice when one of His redeemed children leaves this world. Every life that has been purchased by the blood of Christ is precious to Him, and the moment that believer enters eternity is of great value in His sight. God is not indifferent to death. He understands the sorrow it causes, but He also sees what lies beyond it.

For the Christian, death is not defeat but victory. Jesus Christ conquered death through His resurrection, removing its ultimate sting. Because of His triumph, believers no longer face death as a terrifying unknown but as the doorway into the presence of God. What appears to us as a tragic ending is, from heaven's perspective, a glorious homecoming. The believer exchanges a world of pain, temptation, and suffering for eternal joy, perfect holiness, and everlasting fellowship with the Lord.

Psalm 116 also reminds us that God's relationship with His people does not end at death. Those who belong to Him are His treasured possession throughout life and into eternity. He does not merely receive them after death; He lovingly welcomes them home. This truth offers tremendous comfort to grieving families. Though the separation is painful, it is temporary for those who share faith in Christ. Reunion awaits in the presence of the Lord.

This verse is especially meaningful in ministry to the sick, elderly, and dying. Christians need not fear the final journey because the One who has guided them through life will also guide them through death. As David declared elsewhere, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me" (Psalm 23:4). God's presence never leaves His children—not even in their final moments.

At the same time, Psalm 116:15 quietly reminds us that this promise belongs to "His saints." Therefore the promise is for those who have placed their trust in the Lord. The assurance that death is precious in God's sight is grounded in a covenant relationship with Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ, sinners become saints, forgiven, justified, and adopted into God's family. For them, death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life.

Psalm 116:15 transforms the believer's understanding of death. What the world sees as loss, God sees as gain. What seems to be farewell is actually "welcome home." Therefore, Christians may grieve with hope, live with confidence, and face death without fear, knowing that when the final moment comes, it will be precious in the sight of the Lord.
