March 25 - Psalm 33-35

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry. (Psalm 34:15)

Written by David, this psalm celebrates God’s deliverance and faithfulness. The verse communicates two vivid truths through human imagery: God sees the righteous and God hears their cries. Together these ideas emphasize the intimate relationship between God and His people.

First, the verse declares that “the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous.” In Scripture, God’s “eyes” often symbolize His perfect knowledge and oversight of human life. Nothing escapes His attention. For the righteous, this truth is comforting rather than frightening. It means God is actively observing their struggles, obedience, and faithfulness. The believer is never overlooked or forgotten by God.

The term “the righteous” refers to those who live in reverence and obedience to God. In the Old Testament context, righteousness meant trusting God and striving to live according to His commands. Ultimately, from a broader biblical perspective, righteousness is fully realized through faith in God’s redemptive work. The verse assures that those who belong to God are under His protective and compassionate gaze.

Second, the verse says: “His ears are open to their cry.” This phrase emphasizes God’s responsiveness to prayer. The word “cry” suggests earnest, heartfelt pleading rather than casual speech. It reflects the reality that believers often call upon God in moments of distress, fear, or desperation. Psalm 34 as a whole celebrates God’s deliverance from trouble, and this verse highlights the reason such deliverance is possible: God listens.

Psalm 34:15 also provides encouragement during suffering. Believers sometimes feel abandoned or unheard when difficulties persist. Yet this verse reassures them that God remains fully aware of their situation. His watchful eyes and listening ears confirm that He is personally involved in the lives of the righteous. Even when deliverance is delayed, God’s attentive presence never departs.

Ultimately, Psalm 34:15 reveals a deeply relational God. He is not distant or indifferent; He is actively engaged with those who trust Him. The verse invites believers to live righteously and to approach God with confidence, knowing that their prayers are heard. In times of need, they can cry out with assurance that the Lord both sees their circumstances and listens to their pleas.
