March 26 - Job 23-24
I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food. (Job 23:15)
This statement reveals Job’s unwavering commitment to God despite the devastating trials he faced. It highlights the importance of obedience, the value of divine revelation, and the sustaining power of God’s Word.
First, Job affirms his faithfulness to God’s commands. When he says, “I have not departed from the commandment of His lips,” he is testifying that his life has been marked by obedience. Job had lost his wealth, his children, and his health, yet he maintained a clear conscience before God. This statement is especially significant because his friends accused him of hidden sin as the cause of his suffering. Job, however, insists that he has remained committed to God’s instructions. His obedience was not dependent on prosperity or comfort. Instead, it was rooted in reverence for God. This demonstrates a central biblical principle: true righteousness continues even when circumstances are difficult and confusing.
Second, Job reveals the supreme value he places on God’s Word. He declares that he has “treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Food is essential for physical survival, yet Job claims that God’s Word is even more valuable. This comparison illustrates the spiritual nourishment that God’s revelation provides. Just as the body cannot live without food, the soul cannot thrive without God’s truth. Job’s statement anticipates a theme that appears repeatedly throughout Scripture: the Word of God sustains spiritual life. Believers must rely on divine instruction for wisdom, direction, and strength.
Third, this verse shows how God’s Word sustains believers during suffering. Job’s circumstances were tragic and deeply painful. Yet the foundation of his faith was not his circumstances but the Word of God that he treasured. Because he valued God’s commands so highly, he continued seeking God even when he did not understand what God was doing. His devotion to God’s Word provided stability in a time of turmoil. This teaches that Scripture is not only for moments of peace and prosperity but also for seasons of hardship. When suffering comes, the truths of God’s Word anchor the believer’s heart.
Finally, Job’s statement challenges believers today to examine their own priorities. Many people recognize the importance of the Bible, yet their daily lives reveal that other things often take precedence. Job’s example calls believers to value God’s Word above even basic necessities. If physical food sustains life temporarily, God’s Word sustains life eternally. Therefore, the pursuit of God through Scripture should be a central priority.
