August 21 - Daniel 7-12
And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. (Daniel 12:9-10)
In the closing chapter of the book of Daniel, God gives His faithful prophet a remarkable promise concerning the last days. Daniel desired to understand everything he had seen in the visions God revealed to him, but the Lord answered, "Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end" (Daniel 12:9). Although Daniel would not fully comprehend every detail, God assured him that His purposes would become clear at the appointed time. Verse 10 concludes with a profound statement: "None of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand."
This passage teaches that spiritual understanding is not primarily an intellectual achievement, but a gift given to those whose hearts are right before God. Throughout Scripture, wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Those who humbly seek God, obey His Word, and walk in faith receive discernment that the unbelieving world cannot possess. The wicked reject God's truth, and because they refuse the light, they remain in spiritual darkness.
Daniel 12:10 also emphasizes the refining work of God. "Many shall be purified, made white, and refined." God uses trials, persecution, and testing to purify His people. Just as gold is refined in a furnace, believers are purified through difficult experiences that strengthen their faith and deepen their dependence upon the Lord. While suffering often causes the wicked to become more hardened in their rebellion, it produces holiness and wisdom in those who belong to God.
The contrast in this passage is striking. The wicked continue in wickedness, refusing to repent despite God's warnings. They witness the same events, hear the same message, and yet remain spiritually blind. The wise, however, recognize God's hand at work. They interpret history through the lens of Scripture rather than through human philosophy or worldly opinion. Their understanding comes from a relationship with God rather than from mere human knowledge.
This truth remains highly relevant today. We live in a world overflowing with information but often lacking genuine wisdom. Many people can analyze current events, yet fail to recognize God's sovereign plan unfolding right before their eyes. Believers who diligently study the Scriptures, pray for discernment, and submit themselves to the Holy Spirit are able to understand spiritual realities that others dismiss or ignore. They are not granted exhaustive knowledge of God's timetable, but they are given sufficient understanding to remain faithful and hopeful.
The promise that "the wise shall understand" is therefore both an encouragement and a challenge. God invites His people to seek wisdom through reverent obedience rather than mere curiosity about prophecy. As the day of Christ's return draws nearer, those who remain faithful to His Word will increasingly recognize the fulfillment of His purposes. Their confidence rests not in human speculation but in the certainty that God's promises never fail.
May we strive to be among the wise; those who are purified by God's grace, faithful in times of testing, and attentive to His Word. As we walk humbly with the Lord, He grants the spiritual understanding needed to stand firm until His glorious plan is complete.
