August 20 - Proverbs 17-18
A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)
Friendship is one of God's greatest gifts to mankind. While family relationships are precious, the Bible teaches that there is a unique bond that can exist between true friends. Proverbs 18:24 reminds us that genuine friendship is built upon mutual love, loyalty, and faithfulness. It also points beyond human relationships to the greatest Friend anyone can ever know - Jesus Christ.
The first part of the verse states, "A man who has friends must himself be friendly." Lasting friendships do not happen by accident. They require kindness, patience, humility, and a willingness to invest in others. Many people desire loyal friends, yet they fail to demonstrate the qualities that produce strong relationships. Scripture encourages believers to treat others with love, compassion, and respect. When we show genuine concern for others, we create the foundation upon which lasting friendships can grow.
The second half of the verse presents an even greater truth: "But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." Earthly friendships are valuable, but they are not perfect. Friends may disappoint us, misunderstand us, or drift away over time. Even the closest family members cannot always be present during life's greatest trials. Yet there is One who never leaves His people. Christians have long understood this verse to beautifully describe the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus demonstrated the highest form of friendship through His sacrificial love. He told His disciples in John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” He fulfilled those words at the cross when He willingly gave His life to pay the penalty for our sins. Unlike human friendships that are often based upon convenience or common interests, Christ's friendship is rooted in grace. He loved us while we were still sinners and invites all who trust Him to become children of God.
A true friend is faithful in every season of life. Such a friend offers encouragement in times of discouragement, wise counsel during difficult decisions, loving correction when we stray, and steadfast support through suffering. The Bible gives beautiful examples of such friendships, including the devotion between David and Jonathan. Their relationship was marked by loyalty, sacrifice, and a commitment to honor God above personal gain.
As believers, we should strive to become the kind of friend described in Proverbs. We should be dependable, trustworthy, forgiving, and generous with our time and compassion. In a world where relationships are often shallow and temporary, faithful friendships stand out as a testimony to the love of Christ.
Ultimately, the greatest value of a true friend is found in the example of Jesus Himself. He is the Friend who never abandons His people, never breaks His promises, and never ceases to love those who belong to Him. When we experience His friendship, we are empowered to become faithful friends to others, reflecting His love in every relationship He places in our lives.
