August 19 - Psalm 96-98
Psalm 96 is a joyful call for all creation to worship the Lord because of His majesty, His holiness, and His coming reign. The psalm moves beyond the borders of Israel and summons every nation, every people, and even the natural world to celebrate the Lord. Its central message is one of hope and expectation: "For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth" (Psalm 96:13). For those who know and trust the Lord, His coming is not a reason for fear but for rejoicing.
The psalm begins with the command, "Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth" (Psalm 96:1). A new song reflects fresh gratitude for God's unchanging faithfulness. Every generation has new reasons to praise Him because His mercies are new every morning. God's people are called not only to worship privately but also to proclaim His salvation "from day to day" (Psalm 96:2). Worship naturally overflows into evangelism as believers declare His glory among the nations and His marvelous works among all peoples.
The psalm emphasizes that the Lord alone is worthy of worship. "For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods" (Psalm 96:4). Unlike the worthless idols made by human hands, the Lord is the Creator of the heavens (Psalm 96:5). Everything about Him displays majesty, strength, beauty, and holiness. Therefore, all people are urged to "give to the Lord the glory due His name" (Psalm 96:8). Genuine worship acknowledges God's supreme authority and humbly bows before Him.
One of the most encouraging themes in Psalm 96 is the certainty of Christ's future reign. Verse 10 proclaims, "The Lord reigns; the world also is firmly established, it shall not be moved." Though evil appears to prosper for a season, God remains on His throne. His kingdom cannot be shaken, and His sovereign purposes will be accomplished exactly as He has promised.
The climax of the psalm is found in verses 11 through 13. The heavens rejoice, the earth is glad, the sea roars, the fields are joyful, and even the trees of the forest sing before the Lord. Why does all creation celebrate? Because "He is coming." This points prophetically to the return of Jesus Christ, when He will establish perfect righteousness and justice. His judgment will be fair, impartial, and completely faithful. Sin will be defeated, wrongs will be made right, and God's creation will finally experience the peace for which it longs.
For Christians, the promise of Christ's return fills the heart with joyful anticipation. Rather than fearing the future, believers rejoice because their King is coming. Until that glorious day, the church is called to worship Him faithfully, proclaim His salvation boldly, and live in hopeful expectation. Psalm 96 reminds us that history is moving toward God's appointed conclusion. Therefore, let every heart sing, every voice proclaim His glory, and every believer confidently declare: Rejoice! He is coming!
