October 18 - Hebrews 11-13
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:28)
This powerful conclusion to the chapter reminds believers that while God is infinitely loving and merciful, He is also infinitely holy. The God who saves us through Jesus Christ is the same God whose holiness burns against sin. Therefore, Christians are called to worship Him with gratitude, reverence, and holy fear.
The phrase "a consuming fire" is drawn from the Old Testament, where God's presence was often revealed in fire. Moses encountered God in the burning bush, Israel was led by a pillar of fire, and Mount Sinai was engulfed in flames when God gave the Law. Fire symbolized God's purity, holiness, power, and judgment. Just as fire consumes impurities, God's holy nature cannot tolerate sin. His holiness exposes everything that is unclean and calls His people to lives of obedience and righteousness.
Hebrews contrasts Mount Sinai with Mount Zion. Believers are no longer under the terror of the Law but have come to the heavenly Jerusalem through the finished work of Jesus Christ. Yet this greater privilege does not lessen God's holiness. Instead, it increases our responsibility. Because we have received an unshakable kingdom through grace, our response should be heartfelt worship marked by reverence and godly fear. Grace does not eliminate reverence; rather, grace teaches us to appreciate God's holiness even more deeply.
The statement that God is a consuming fire also reminds believers that He disciplines His children. Earlier in Hebrews 12, the writer explains that God's discipline is evidence of His love. Like a refiner's fire that removes dross from precious metals, God uses trials, correction, and testing to purify the lives of His people. His purpose is not to destroy His children but to make us holy, producing "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" (Hebrews 12:11). The fire of God's holiness refines believers so they may become more like Christ.
For those who reject God's gracious offer of salvation, however, His holiness becomes a fire of judgment. Throughout Scripture, God judges persistent rebellion because His justice is perfect. The cross itself demonstrates both God's love and His holiness. There, Jesus Christ bore the judgment that sinners deserved, satisfying the righteous demands of God's justice. Those who trust in Christ are forgiven and reconciled to God, while those who refuse Him remain under judgment.
The truth that "our God is a consuming fire" should therefore inspire both comfort and caution. Believers can rejoice that they belong to an unshakable kingdom secured by Christ, yet they must never treat God casually or worship Him carelessly. True worship flows from thankful hearts that recognize God's greatness, holiness, and majesty.
