October 7 - Psalm 117-118
Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples! 2 For His merciful kindness is great toward us, And the truth of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 117)
Though Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible, containing only two verses, it delivers one of the greatest messages in all of Scripture. Its brevity does not diminish its significance. Instead, this small psalm presents a powerful call to worship that reaches across every nation and every generation. It reminds us that God is worthy of praise because of His unfailing love and His eternal faithfulness.
The psalm begins with a universal invitation: "Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples!" (Psalm 117:1). Unlike many Old Testament passages that focus primarily on the nation of Israel, this psalm extends God's invitation to every nation on earth. The psalmist calls not only the covenant people but all peoples and all ethnic groups to lift their voices in praise. This anticipates the New Testament truth that salvation through Jesus Christ would be offered to the whole world. The Apostle Paul quoted Psalm 117 in Romans 15:11 to demonstrate that God's plan has always included the Gentiles in His redemptive purpose. The gospel is not limited by race, nationality, language, or culture. Every person is invited to know and worship the living God.
Verse two gives the reasons for this universal praise: "For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!" Two attributes of God stand at the center of this verse: His steadfast love and His enduring truth.
First, God is worthy of praise because of His merciful kindness. The Hebrew word often translated "lovingkindness" or "steadfast love" describes God's faithful covenant love. His love is not based upon our worthiness but upon His gracious character. Throughout history God has continually shown mercy to undeserving sinners. The greatest demonstration of that mercy is found at the cross, where Jesus Christ bore our sins so that we might receive forgiveness and eternal life. Every believer has experienced this amazing grace personally and therefore has every reason to praise the Lord.
Second, God deserves praise because His truth endures forever. Human promises often fail, cultures change, and worldly philosophies come and go, but God's Word remains constant. His character never changes, His promises never fail, and His purposes always stand. Believers can confidently build their lives upon the eternal truth of Scripture because the God who spoke it is forever faithful.
Psalm 117 concludes exactly where it began: "Praise the LORD!" The final Hebrew expression, Hallelujah, literally means, "Praise Yahweh." It is both a command and a joyful response. Worship is not merely an activity reserved for church services; it is the natural response of grateful hearts that have experienced God's mercy and trusted His truth.
Although Psalm 117 is remarkably short, its message is wonderfully expansive. It calls every person everywhere to worship the Lord because His love reaches every nation and His faithfulness lasts forever. As we reflect on His saving grace through Jesus Christ and His unchanging Word, may our hearts continually echo the simple but profound message of this psalm: Praise the Lord!
