FOCUS PASSAGE: Daniel 5:17-21
The account of Daniel standing before King Belshazzar in Daniel 5 is one of the clearest declarations in Scripture that God is sovereign over every ruler and every kingdom. While Belshazzar was surrounded by wealth, power, and military strength, he was completely unaware that his kingdom was about to fall. Into this moment of pride and false security, God sent His servant Daniel with a message that every generation needs to hear: God rules!
Daniel refused the king's rewards, saying, "Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation" (Daniel 5:17). Unlike the king's advisers, Daniel could not be bribed. His loyalty was to God alone. God's servants must never allow personal gain to compromise the truth they proclaim. The message of God is not for sale.
Daniel then reminded Belshazzar of the experience of his predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar. God had granted Nebuchadnezzar greatness, glory, honor, and majesty. Everything the king possessed had been given to him by the Lord. Yet Nebuchadnezzar became proud, imagining that his accomplishments were the result of his own wisdom and strength. Pride hardened his heart and blinded him to the fact that he ruled only because God permitted it.
As a result, God humbled the mighty king. Daniel recalled that Nebuchadnezzar was removed from his throne, driven from human society, and lived among the beasts of the field. His reason departed from him until he learned the lesson God intended him to learn: "the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses" (Daniel 5:21). This truth is the central theme of the passage. Human governments rise and fall, but God's authority never changes.
Belshazzar should have learned from Nebuchadnezzar's experience. Instead, he ignored God's warnings and continued in pride and rebellion. That very night the Babylonian Empire fell exactly as God had declared. The handwriting on the wall was not merely a prediction of political change; it was a declaration of divine judgment upon a ruler who refused to acknowledge God's sovereignty.
The lesson remains timeless. Political leaders, business executives, pastors, and ordinary citizens are all accountable to the Lord. Every ability, opportunity, and position of influence is ultimately a gift from God. Pride leads to destruction because it attempts to rob God of the glory that belongs to Him alone. Humility, however, recognizes that God is the rightful King over all creation.
For believers today, Daniel 5 encourages unwavering faith in God's sovereign rule. Nations may change, economies may fluctuate, and earthly leaders may disappoint us, but God's throne is never threatened. He governs history according to His perfect wisdom and accomplishes His purposes despite human rebellion. Therefore, our confidence should never rest in earthly kingdoms but in the eternal kingdom of God. Like Daniel, we are called to stand courageously for the truth, knowing that the Most High still rules in the kingdom of men and that His authority will endure forever.
