August 15 - John 3-4
FOCUS PASSAGE: John 3:1-17
This passage records one of the most important conversations in all of Scripture. Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus by night seeking answers. Although he was highly educated in the Old Testament, respected by his peers, and deeply religious, Jesus immediately addressed the one thing Nicodemus lacked: spiritual life. Christ declared, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). This statement reveals that entrance into God's kingdom is not gained through religion, morality, education, or good works, but only through the miracle of the new birth.
Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus and thought He was speaking about a second physical birth. Jesus explained that He was referring to a spiritual birth. Every person has experienced a physical birth, but because of sin every human being is spiritually dead and separated from God. Therefore, every sinner must experience a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that brings new life. Jesus said, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). Flesh can only produce flesh, but only the Holy Spirit can produce spiritual life.
The new birth is mysterious in its operation but unmistakable in its results. Jesus compared the Spirit's work to the wind, which cannot be seen but whose effects are clearly evident. A person who has been born again receives a new heart, new desires, and a new relationship with God. Salvation is not merely turning over a new leaf; it is receiving a new life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus then reminded Nicodemus of the bronze serpent lifted by Moses in the wilderness. The Israelites who looked upon the serpent in faith were physically healed. Likewise, Jesus declared that the Son of Man would be lifted up on the cross so that everyone who believes in Him would receive eternal life. Salvation comes by looking to Christ in faith, trusting completely in His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection rather than in personal merit.
The heart of the passage is found in John 3:16, perhaps the best-known verse in the Bible: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." God's love motivated the sending of His Son, and faith in Christ is the only means by which sinners receive eternal life. Verse 17 reminds us that Jesus came not to condemn the world but to provide salvation for all who believe.
The message of John 3 remains unchanged today. Church membership, baptism, religious activity, or family heritage cannot save anyone. Jesus' words still confront every person: "You must be born again." Every individual must personally repent, believe the gospel, and receive the new life that only Jesus Christ can give.
